How many bricks do I need per area?

What's a bond pattern and why does it matter?

The calculator handles four bonds: stretcher (1× brick count), English (2×), Flemish (1.5×), and stack (1×). English bond uses roughly double the bricks of stretcher bond.

How much mortar do I need?

The calculator estimates mortar volume from net wall area and bond pattern, then computes cement bags assuming a 1:4 cement-to-sand mix.

Standard brick vs CMU — what's the difference?

The calculator supports both. Standard bricks (215×65mm) are smaller and used in higher counts per area. CMU blocks (4", 6", 8" sizes) are much larger — fewer units per area but each is heavier.

How many bricks in a square foot?

About 7 standard bricks per sq ft of wall in stretcher bond (with 10mm joints). Modular bricks are ~6.5/sq ft. CMU blocks: 1.13/sq ft (8″ block face is 7.6 in × 15.6 in = 0.823 sq ft).

What mortar mix should I use?

Type N (1:1:6 cement:lime:sand) for typical residential above-grade walls. Type S (1:1/2:4.5) for below-grade, retaining walls, and exterior work in freeze climates. Type M (1:1/4:3) for heavy-load structural masonry. Match mortar to wall function and code.
