How to Use This Calculator

Formula

totalLength = ⌈runLength × (1 + waste/100)⌉  (lf)pieces = ⌈totalLength / pieceLength⌉

Parameters

Piece Length
Standard: 8 ft. Also 10 and 12 ft.
Waste %
Extra for mitered corners and odd-length walls.

Results

Total Length
Linear feet including waste.
Pieces
Trim pieces to purchase.

Example

Baseboard for a Room

56 ft perimeter (minus doorways), 8 ft pieces, 10% waste

totalLength = ⌈56 × 1.10⌉ = 62 lfpieces = ⌈62 / 8⌉ = 8 pieces

Common Use Cases

  • Baseboard and shoe molding
  • Crown molding installation
  • Chair rail and wainscoting cap
  • Window and door casing

Notes

  • Measure wall-to-wall, subtract doorways.
  • Mitered corners add waste — increase % for many corners.
  • Typical waste %: 5–8% for straight runs and one or two corners; 10–15% for rooms with 4+ inside corners or many short walls.
  • Common trim profiles: 3-1/4″ colonial baseboard, 5-1/4″ taller baseboard, 2-1/4″ door/window casing, 3″–5″ crown molding. Match scale to ceiling height.
